Governor Pen Portraits

Margot D'Arcy - Chair of Governor, Co-opted Governor
I am delighted to be the Chair of Governors at St Mary and St Thomas. I am married to Mike and we have six grandchildren between the ages of 5 and 12. We also enjoy being temporary ‘step grandparents’ to different children fostered by one of my sons and his wife.

I am driven by a belief that all children are entitled to a high quality and happy education. My passion draws on many things, not least my own primary school experience in inner city Liverpool back in the 1960s. Regrettably, that was not a particularly positive experience. I was, however, very fortunate to go to an amazing secondary school. It was there that I was inspired to become a teacher. While circumstances meant that I was not able to follow that route immediately, eventually I realised my dream.

I have now worked in education for over 25 years. I started my teaching career teaching Reception children. After a spell as an early years and key stage 1 leader, I became a deputy headteacher and later a headteacher. During that period I also became an Ofsted inspector. I have many years experience of leading inspections in primary and nursery schools and have been privileged to see much wonderful practice. I know too that I have influenced improvements where these were needed.

Currently I am a self-employed education consultant. I provide training and support for school leaders, teaching staff and governors.  I continue to work as an Ofsted inspector.

I am immensely looking forward my governor role at Saint Mary and Saint Thomas, especially getting to know the school’s staff, pupils and parents.

Reverend Harry Wood - Vice-Chair of Governors, Ex-Officio (Incumbent) Governor
Based at St Thomas Church, I am currently interim team vicar within the St Helens Town Centre team. I served my Curacy at St Helens Parish Church, and before that worked in Engineering for some 28 years. I’m delighted to be at St Thomas Church, and equally so to be involved with St Mary and St Thomas School. I’m was born in St Helens, serving my apprenticeship at Beecham's in the town centre and I have seen the landscape of the town change over the years. I’m totally convinced that the part our schools play in the lives of young people goes beyond solely academic achievement, and I’m delighted to support staff and governors wherever possible in the immeasurably valuable work they do.

Lyndsey Lewis - Ex-Officio (Headteacher) Governor
I am thrilled to have been appointed Headteacher at St Mary & St Thomas in September 2016. Having worked for the school for two years as Assistant Headteacher, I know what a wonderful school we have and am so excited to take the school forward and carry on the successful work of our Executive Principal.

Elizabeth Collins - Foundation Governor
I have been linked to St Mary & St Thomas for well over thirty years now, having served twice as Chair of Governors.  This was a pleasure, as well as being very hard work sometimes.  My working life was in education from teaching to inspecting and I still try to keep up to date, but things change very much more swiftly than even fifteen years ago.  I am still learning, as well as enjoying being with the children and supporting the staff and seeing both age groups grow and succeed in a warm and safe, yet challenging atmosphere.

Linda Smith - Staff Governor
I have over 15 years of experience working in primary schools in St Helens, and have been Head of Safeguarding and Wellbeing and a senior leader for the past 7 years at St Mary & St Thomas’ CE Primary School and recently appointed as Director of Wellbeing for The Three Saints Academy Trust. My responsibilities include child protection, safeguarding and all aspects of pastoral care and emotional wellbeing for children and families. I manage a team consisting of teaching assistants trained as quasi-therapists offering therapeutic interventions and a family support worker responsible for attendance and early intervention family support.  I liaise extensively with outside agencies whether statutory or voluntary in seeking additional resources and support for the school. I work as a Specialist Leader of Education, advising and supporting other schools and regularly facilitate training for the St Helens Teaching School Alliance and the local authority in respect of LAC and all areas of Safeguarding to multi agencies including schools.

Sally Jones - Parent Governor
I am delighted to be able to have the opportunity to be a parent governor at St Mary and St Thomas CE Primary School.  I have two children who have attended the school, one who has successfully finished and moved to higher education, and one who is currently in the juniors. My career is completely separate from education which I feel is beneficial as a parent governor as I can be influential from an outside experience. I feel that St Mary and St Thomas has certainly been a successful school for both educational and life lessons for children and the values my children have learned here are irreplaceable.  I am looking forward to being part of and seeing the school progress and shine.

Geoff Almond - Foundation Governor
I have been a governor of various schools for over forty years and have been a governor at our school for a umber of years. I am a former primary school teacher and was headteacher of an outstanding primary school for over eighteen years until retiring. I am currently the Deputy Chair of the Liverpool Diocesan Board of Education and was  the Mayor of St.Helens from 2012 to 2013.

Jo-Anne Finnigan - Foundation Governor
As of January 2015, I am new to the role of Foundation Governor. Having two school aged children who attend St Mary & St Thomas’ makes me both interested in the workings of the school and keen to see how their school careers will progress in this most positive learning environment. Having previously worked as a secondary school teacher, I hope I can draw upon my experiences in education to assist in decision making. Above all, my past experience as a teacher makes me appreciate the hard work that goes on to ensure the best provision for children at St Mary & St Thomas’. I really look forward to working with staff, governors and pupils over the next 4 years and to watch our school progress and succeed.
